In the thrilling third book of this sci-fi trilogy, one cat must face the depths of the universe alone—but sometimes, in the Wild Black, miracles do happen.

Wounded and stranded on a freighter that’s crashed on the remote planet of Inimical 38LY, Bruce the superintelligent cat is the only one who can get help for his friend Ben. Outside the wrecked ship, the ecosystems of the planet perpetually merge, morph, and consume one another. Worse, they’re trying to get in, and it’s up to Bruce to send a signal out to the stars in the hope that someone, anyone, will find them before that happens.

Fortunately, Deep Strike Capt. Vin Loach of the Rosalind Franklin and his crew have picked up the distress call. Now they just need to locate it among the vicious flora and fauna of the hostile world. But the downed freighter holds secrets even the Wild Black isn’t prepared for, and the crew of the Rosa aren’t the only ones looking for it . . .

“A real adventure, equally joyous and thought-provoking.” —Adrian Tchaikovsky, Arthur C. Clarke Award–winning author of Children of Time

“Tense, immersive, and fearlessly creative. Highly recommended.” —Gareth L. Powell, British Science Fiction Association Award–winning author of Embers of War

“The Wild Black is a scary place, but thankfully Barker sends us in with a delightful cast of uplifted creatures at the helm. Breakneck, brutal, and wonderfully warm-hearted.” —Caspar Geon, Phillip K. Dick Award–nominated author of The Immeasurable Heaven

“Brimming with ideas, adventure, cats, bears, and rooks (and a pesky human or two), this is a fantastically fresh and hopeful space opera.” —Stewart Hotston, author of Project Hanuman
