Couldn’t see a single feature that might tell me whether I should be relieved or even more afraid. There was only the black gun in his hand.

For one horrible second, I thought he was one of them. But then he lifted the gun.

The first shot made me flinch. The second made the hands holding me disappear. I fell to the floor, too exhausted to run, and simply watched the stranger move through the room.

The attackers scattered. He killed two of them. Injured the third. The others managed to escape because he didn’t chase them. Instead, he turned to me.

I should have been afraid. But when the last attacker disappeared, I didn’t see the blood on the floor or the gun in his hand anymore. I only saw the man who came when I had stopped believing anyone would.
