  • Born John Camp in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, he earned a journalism degree from the University of Iowa and later an M.A. in American Studies.
  • Before turning to fiction, he was a reporter and columnist for the St. Paul Pioneer Press, winning the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Writing in 1986.
  • He adopted the pen name John Sandford at the suggestion of his publisher when Rules of Prey launched in 1989.
  • The Prey novels introduced Lucas Davenport, one of the most recognizable detectives in modern crime fiction.
  • His Virgil Flowers spin-off series began with Dark of the Moon (2007) and features a more laid-back investigator from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
  • His 36th Prey novel is scheduled for release in April 2026.
  • With his wife, Michele Cook, he co-authored the Singular Menace YA trilogy, beginning with Uncaged (2014).
