She has spent a lifetime healing others. Now the past is asking something of her.

At seventy-seven, Clara has no intention of slowing down. For more than fifty years, she has cared for the people of New Orleans at the small community clinic named for her missionary parents. Sinclair House, her family’s grand historic home, is filled with an unlikely collection of people who have nowhere else to go.

But when state funding for Clara’s clinic comes to an end, the future she has always taken for granted suddenly becomes uncertain. And memories she thought she’d buried begin rising to the surface.

Memories of growing up in Kenya with her missionary parents. Of being sent to New Orleans at fifteen to live with the formidable grandmother she’d never met. And of Vietnam, where a young Army nurse fell in love with a journalist during the darkest days of the war—and made a choice that would haunt her for more than half a century.

As past and present converge, Clara realizes some wounds cannot be healed by simply leaving them behind. Some require us to go back and face what we lost.

From the author of the bestselling Soul Seekers collection comes an unforgettable story of love, loss, family, and the extraordinary ways our past can lead us home.
