When a retired schoolteacher is found smothered in his armchair with an unsigned, twenty-year-old letter placed in his lap, an exhausted new-father detective must outrun a patient, methodical killer working down a list of names from a single summer in 2006—before the last one runs out of time.

Geoffrey Priestley taught for thirty years without ever raising his voice. When his wife finds him dead in his favourite chair, nothing stolen, nothing forced, only a folded, decades-old piece of paper left across his knees, ACC Corrigan calls it a burglary gone wrong.

He’s wrong within the week.

A second body turns up with an object of its own, carefully placed, and a third follows before the city has finished talking about the first two. Every scene has been staged by someone who knows exactly what the police will look for, and exactly how to give them nothing at all.

With a newborn son at home, a partner still recovering from a birth that nearly killed her, and a chief officer more interested in the headlines than the case, George Beaumont has days, maybe hours, to find the one name still missing from a list someone has been keeping since before most of his team could drive.

Some debts take twenty years to come due. This one is almost paid in full.

Set within the suburbs of Leeds, West Yorkshire, this fast-paced British detective novel is a crime thriller that will keep you guessing until the end.

The Folded Letter is the twenty-eighth book in the Detective George Beaumont thriller series.
